Introduction of Top 10 Analog Semiconductor IC Suppliers in 2018

IC Insights’ 2019 McClean Report

The April Update to IC Insights’ 2019 McClean Report ranks the top 50 semiconductor suppliers, and the figure 1 shows IC Insights’ ranking of the largest 10 analog suppliers in 2018.

IC Insight, company reports

With analog sales of $10.8 billion and an 18 percent market share, TI(Texas instruments ) maintains a solid position as the global analog equipment supplier. TI's simulated sales grew by $900 million in 2018, almost twice as much as ADI, which ranked second, and 10 times more than Renesas, which ranked 10th, one of two companies in the top 10 for simulated sales declines. TI's 2018 analog revenue accounted for 78% of its $13.9 billion in IC sales and 72% of its total semiconductor revenue of $14.9 billion.

According to IC Insights 2018 semiconductor company rankings, the top 10 analog IC vendors accounted for 60 percent, or $36.1 billion, of global analog sales last year, up from nearly 61 percent, or $33 billion, in 2017.

Some one emailed me not too long ago to ask me if its possible to write an article to introduce some chip manufacturers. Yes, time is now.

Top 10: Renesas

Renesas is a semiconductor company incorporated on April 1, 2003 for Hitachi manufacturing and Mitsubishi electric's semiconductor business (excluding semiconductors for power control), headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. Renesas combines Hitachi and Mitsubishi's advanced technology and rich experience in the semiconductor field, and is a global supplier of embedded semiconductors for the wireless network, automotive, consumer and industrial markets. In April 2010, NEC and Renesas technologies merged to form renesas electronics, which operates in a wide range of research, development, design and manufacturing applications. It is still based in Japan, but NEC is no longer renesas' parent company, holding stakes on a par with Hitachi and mitsubishi electric. On September 13, 2016, Renesas paid $32.19 billion in cash for Intersil of the United States at $22.50 per share. According to the April update to IC Insights’ 2019 McClean report, Renesas is one of two companies in the top 10 for simulated sales declines.

Top 9: Microchip

Microchip Technology inc. is a leading provider of microcontrollers and analog semiconductors, providing low-risk product development, lower total system costs, and faster time-to-market for thousands of customer applications worldwide. Headquartered in Chandler, Arizona, Microchip provides outstanding technical support, timely and reliable delivery, and superior product quality.

In August 2012, Microchip acquired Standard Microsystems Corporation (SMSC). SMSC (nasdaq stock code: SMSC) is the leading developer of Smart mixed-signal Connectivity™ solutions at that time. Using a unique system-level design approach, SMSC provides its customers with unique products by integrating multiple technologies and intellectual property. The company is focused on providing connectivity solutions for the widespread use of a variety of data in cars, consumer electronics, personal computers and other applications.

In 2016, Microchip agreed to buy Atmel for $3.6 billion. Atmel has touch sensing controller IP, MEMS sensor interface and security technology, which are all products that Microchip lacks. And Microchip was named to Forbes' 2018 best U.S. employers list.

In March 2018 Microchip Technology announced it would acquire Microsemi for approximately $10 billion. Oh, maybe Microchip want to acquire the ON Semiconductor in the next step.

Top 8: ON Semi

ON Semiconductor is the leading supplier of high-performance silicon solutions for energy efficient electronic products. The company's product range includes power and signal management, logic, discrete and custom components to help customers solve their unique design challenges in automotive, communications, computer, consumer electronics, industrial, LED lighting, medical, military/aviation and power applications, both fast and cost-effective. The company's key market operations in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific include manufacturing plants and sales offices.
